Key West: Vacation Planning Tips

If you’ve never been to Key West and considering a vacation there, I think you will love it!  With so much to see and do, there is something for everyone in Key West.  If you’re ready to start planning your own getaway, explore my travel planning services to make the process seamless and stress-free.

I just returned from a wonderful trip to Key West.  The weather was nice and warm.  It has a laid back island vibe that makes for a relaxing, stress-free vacation.  I traveled with my husband and several friends for whom I booked their travel arrangements.  Key West pricing is high most of the year but there are ways to spend less and save some money to work it into your budget.  As a travel advisor, I can help you get the most value out of your vacation budget.  Here’s a few of my recommendations for your trip:

Accommodations

There are so many hotels, condos, and other lodgings available to suit your needs and budget in Key West.  You can stay in town for a more active, central location or stay just outside of town for a more quiet, relaxing experience.  There are quaint places near busy Duval Street or luxury resorts at the southern end.  For a moderate price point and good value, I recommend staying at the Doubletree By Hilton Grand Key Resort which is a short drive from town.  I recently stayed there after the hotel was completely renovated. What makes this hotel so nice is the service they provide. The staff is very friendly and accommodating. Upon arrival, you are greeted with complimentary warm chocolate chip walnut cookies – so yummy! With their free shuttles to and from the airport, to and from town and to and from Smather’s beach with lounge chairs, you do not need a car.  This saves you money on the rental and avoids the parking hassle (if you can find one) and fees. The food at the indoor restaurant and outside bar is very good, the pool area is lovely, the rooms are clean and recently updated. Overall, I was very happy with our stay at this hotel.  I was able to get good rates and upgraded rooms for my client bookings as well. If you’re unsure which area or hotel is best for your trip, I can help you choose the right fit through my custom vacation planning.

Dining

Key West offers many excellent restaurants to choose from with top-rated seafood, cuban flavors, unique settings and more.  There are some great casual cafes and food trucks such as Garbos Grill at Hank’s hair of the dog saloon as well as fabulous upscale dining options like Hot Tin Roof.  And, don’t forget to try the key lime pie while in Key West! So many to choose from such as Kermit’s Key Lime Pie Shop.  We dined at Moondog Cafe where the swordfish special was divine. Worth the walk from town and the wait in line!  I also like Alonso’s Oyster bar at the harbor.  The hogfish was delicious!  There are also good deals to be found on happy hour food and drinks to save money, such as at Two Friends Patio restaurant.  Highly recommend these places although you probably can’t go too wrong anywhere in town.

Activities

When you think of what to do while visiting Key West, you may want to stroll along Duval Street or see the Southernmost point in the USA (90 miles from Cuba) but there are so many other things to do as well.  Visit the Hemingway home and museum with the 6 toed cats. Go shopping (the $5 store has some great souvenirs).  Visit an art gallery.  Step back into history seeing the Truman White House.  Climb up the lighthouse.  See the sunset at Mallory Square.  Take a trolley tour around town.  Stop at the Southernmost mansion and beachside cafe.  Sail on a catamaran sunset cruise. I especially liked going to the Key West Butterfly Conservatory – an amazing experience! Discount coupons to many attractions are also available.  Key West may not be famous for their beaches but there are several white sand beaches that are very nice such as Smather’s, Higgs and Fort Zachary Taylor beaches.  And, of course, you cannot miss the multitude of roosters and chickens that roam freely around town!

With so many options, planning the perfect itinerary can feel overwhelming—but that’s where I can help. Take a look at my travel inspiration page for more ideas and curated trips.
